Transparent Braces: Why Thorough Doctor Consultations Are So Important

27 November 2020

When it comes to invisible braces in Hong Kong, as long as the provider you are going for operates out of a dental clinic, it should be fine… right?

Well… not exactly.

Not all consultations are made equal

Not all invisible braces providers will provide you with a thorough consultation with an orthodontist or dentist. And if you’re heaving a sigh of relief, you really shouldn’t.

Having quality facetime with a licensed professional is incredibly important, especially when you’re about to embark on a journey that may take a few months and has results that may last a lifetime.

Here’s what to expect in a thorough screening in-person consultation with a locally qualified dentist or orthodontist

We recommend that it be done in-person – do check their qualifications and medical degree! This definitely beats having this done by only a Sales Rep or something similar.

Secondly, it’s in your best interest to have the dentist examine your teeth in great detail. This includes taking X-rays before treatment. They will proceed to inform you of any oral conditions that you may have, and then determine whether invisible braces are suitable for your needs.

A reputable orthodontist or dentist will never downplay conditions that could be aggravated or cause injuries after using invisible braces. Heeding their advice is the first step to achieving the smile of your dreams. After all, they are the experts!

Thirdly, do not hand over your credit card or payment details before you both see and approve your treatment plan. Investing in the best smile journey for you is an important decision, so make sure you take your time to think it over.

X-rays

It is essential for your orthodontist or dentist to review your X-rays before prescribing treatment plans with invisible braces.

This is because conditions like periodontal disease or tooth abnormalities under the gum line can’t be detected with the naked eye.

Wearing invisible braces while suffering from periodontal disease, may worsen your condition and possibly even result in tooth loss.

IPR

IPR, or interproximal reduction, involves creating space between teeth so that they can move without incident.

Did you know that many Asians have overcrowded teeth which restrict the ability of the teeth to move to their new, straightened positions? Coupled with teeth that protrude (bimaxillary protrusion), wearing invisible braces without IPR may result in your teeth shifting further outwards simply because they have no other place to go.

So do check with your dentist or orthodontist if you require IPR before proceeding with your treatment.

Don’t take shortcuts with transparent braces

Nobody likes long wait times. But when your lifelong smile is at stake, it’s well worth the wait – especially for the thorough consultations, scans, and X-rays.

Remember: trying to save some time is not as important as saving your smile. Get proper treatment with a licensed, professional orthodontist or dentist!
