Depending on what type of braces treatment you go for, a common question most people ask is: Does removing braces hurt?

If you’re concerned about any pain that you may experience, here’s some good news: It doesn’t have to hurt that much, especially if you’re wearing Invisible Braces! And in this article, we’ll explain the potential discomfort you may experience, as well as what you can do to maintain your smile post-treatment.

The Process of Removing Braces

Removing traditional braces

Typically, traditional braces wearers go to their orthodontist to have their teeth checked, and have them removed once their teeth and bite are correct. The archwire connecting the brackets on each tooth is removed, and each bracket will be gently detached from your teeth using special tools. Any remaining adhesive used to secure the brackets will be carefully cleaned from your tooth enamel. After that, your teeth will be polished to ensure your smile looks great!

Removing Invisible Braces

The great thing about Invisible Braces is that each aligner can be easily removed. You’ll normally remove them before and after meals, to prevent food from getting stuck in your aligners.

During your Smile Journey, you’ll need to wear a number of aligners, as instructed by the treating dentist. Each aligner is worn for 10 days, before you switch to the next set.

For the first few days after wearing a new set, you may experience some discomfort as your teeth are in the process of shifting into their new positions. But the pain does go away as the days go by. Our top tip? Switch to a new aligner set right before bedtime to experience less discomfort.

Does taking your braces off hurt?

The good news: for most people, taking metal braces off is not painful. You might feel some slight pressure when the brackets are removed, but it’s a far cry from the tightening adjustments you’re used to.

However, if you’re on Invisible Braces treatment, you’ll be able to remove your aligners all the time! Just remember to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours every day so that your smile can transform according to plan!

How to manage potential discomfort when removing braces

During your Invisible Braces journey, you may need to remove aligners frequently as you progress through the different sets. Initially, the aligner trays can be very tight, especially if you’re switching to a new set of aligners. In addition, teeth can be sore as they move, which makes placing and removing the aligners painful.

The discomfort normally goes away after a few days. But if the pain persists, get in touch with the Zenyum team so we can assist you!

Your mouth and teeth can feel sore during the first few days of wearing a new set of aligners. A good tip is to stay away from hard, crunchy snacks for a few days to ease the pain you may feel when chewing.
